Moga FAQ (by The Boss, published Thursday, 05 November 2009 19:27)
MOGA FAQ
What is MOGA? MOGA is the Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure. A fun event that was started by the St. Louis Area Geocachers Association.
Why does it exist? MOGA exists because people have fun geocaching and hanging out with each other. Since the first MOGA in 2004, we have continued to grow it to become a popular Midwest event where people from all over can come and stay.
Where will it be in 2010? Mark Twain Lake is one of Missouri's premier lakes. With a perfect setting for a geocaching event, the US Army Corps of Engineers has donated the use of the Indian Creek Recreation Area, a beautiful and peaceful area of the lake. The staff at USACOE have donated the ammo boxes we will use for the event.
Why do you always have the event at Mark Twain Lake? Every city, county, and state agency we have contacted requires a minimum of 2 million dollars of insurance coverage for an event like ours. This would add from $10.00 to $15.00 to the registration of each participant. The US Army Corps of Engineers has waived this insurance as long as everyone signs a waiver before they attend the event. If this is not done, they will be forced to require the insurance coverage. This is why it is so important everyone gets us their waiver.
Will there be camping? Camping will be provided by the Corps of Engineers at the Indian Creek Recreation Area. The camping is half price but you must call to reserve your spot. Full Hookups, (Sewer, Water, Electric) will be $11.00 per day while Electric Only sites will be $8.00 per day. Please call (573) 735-4097 and tell them you are with MOGA.
What about hotels? There are many hotels and cabins in the area. Once again, we have negotiated a special MOGA rate with local hotels, cabins and resorts. Check out the Accommodations page in the MOGA Manual for full details.
Do I have to register everyone in my family? YES! We have multiple levels of registration from full-blown packets with meals to totally free registrations. Please go to our registration page for full details. If you want to purchase meals, you must purchase them in advance by registering online! Because of selling restrictions, no meal tickets can be purchased at MOGA.
Why should I purchase a registration package? By signing up for a registration package early, you are guaranteed that you will be able to receive MOGA merchandise, and save money with a package deal. It also gives us the much needed revenue to purchase all of the merchandise in advance. If you wait until the event to purchase merchandise from the store, it will cost you more to buy the items individually, and we can't guarantee that everything will be in stock. This doesn't mean you have to pay online. You have the option of mailing in a check. Everyone who wishes to participate in the Poker Run must be registered. The Tin and Scout packages qualify.
Do I have to fill out a waiver? We need a waiver from every person who attends MOGA. The waiver can be downloaded from the website and faxed or mailed to us (see info at the bottom of the form). If you don't fill out a waiver beforehand, you will have to fill one out at the Registration table at the event.
Can I enter all the competitions? The Individual Competition will start at 8:00 am Saturday morning. The 2-Person Team (Couples) and the 4-Person Team Competitions will both start at 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon. You could enter the Individual Competition and a Team Competition, and have a chance to get two GOLD award coins.
Can couples split up if we each have a GPS? No. The Couples Competition is designed to keep people together. Each team receives one punch card and must cache together to look for the punches. It wouldn't be fair to other 2-person teams that have only 1 GPSr.
Can only 3 of us compete in the 4-person team? Yes you can, but you will be at a major disadvantage. Four-person teams will split up and take certain areas. Each team member will have a punch card, and they will fill their cards with punches however they feel works best for them. Most teams will assign certain areas or punches to each person and rendezvous back at the finish line prior to the deadline. This would be a major disadvantage for a 3-person team. Therefore it is best to compete with 4 people, each with their own GPS.
Will there be food at the event? Yes, we will have hot meals catered at the event. Just like in the past, you can pre-purchase breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and dinner Saturday night. The menu for all meals can be found in the MOGA Manual. If you prefer, you can bring your own food, or visit one of the local eating establishments in the area. All MOGA meals must be pre-purchased. We are not allowed to sell meal tickets at the event.
I want to participate in the competition, do I still need to register? YES! Everyone must register whether they are competing or not. You will need to register as a participant. You can choose the registration level you would like, but it must be done. Register for the event and then select the competition you want to enter.
Which age division will my team be assigned to? Age divisions for the men's and women's Individual Competition and the Team Competitions are identical: 29 and Under, 30 to 49, and 50 and above. For 2-person teams (couples), we will take the average of both team members' ages to determine which age group you will compete in. For example, if the team members are age 12 + 36, the average age is 24, so your team would complete in the 29 and under group. For 4-person teams, we will use the age group that the majority of team members fall in. For example, if 3 people are age 30 to 49, that's the age division your team will compete with. If there is no age majority, then we will use an average of all team members' ages. For example, if the team members are age 22 + 33 + 45 + 60 (160 total), we would divide that total by 4 to get 40, so the team would compete in the 30 to 49 age division. We changed this from previous years (where the youngest member determined your age division) so we can get more 50+ teams involved.

MOGA Manual (by L Frank, published Thursday, 29 October 2009 10:40)
2010 Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure
(MOGA) Sponsored by
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -
Mark Twain Lake and the
St. Louis Area Geocachers Association
(SLAGA)

April 9 – 11, 2010
Indian Creek Recreation Area
Mark Twain Lake, Monroe City, Missouri
Overview
MOGA started in 2004 as the Midwest Invitational Geocaching Competition (MIGC). We had just barely over 80 in attendance for that event. The next year, we wanted the event to be more inviting to non-competitors so it was renamed to Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure, MOGA. Today, MOGA has become one of the world’s largest geocaching competitions.
Other caches will be available anytime and include over 300+ permanent caches! In the past, we have held non-competitors from entering the courses until one hour after the start time of the competition. A lot of people did not like this as they drove many miles to cache, not sit around. This is why we changed the courses and the non-competitor caches so they could easily coexist. Now, non-competitors can start looking for caches before the event. The punch containers will not be located near the permanent caches.
The competition courses are described below. In addition to those courses, we will have several other activities. There will be a Poker Run, kids’ caches, fellowshipping, friendly chatter about GSAK and GPS units, favorite puzzle caches, etc. We will have a “cracker barrel”, a social event where everyone brings a snack to share, at the auditorium area at Indian Creek. Don’t forget, you don’t have to compete to look for the 300+ anytime caches.
For the competitions this year, we will hide 30 small caches containing punches on each course. These will be hidden in and around the Army Corps of Engineer’s property. They will range from easy to difficult. We will hand out a topographical map of the area with all punch containers included. The topographical maps will help competitors navigate from punch to punch.
MOGA will run from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. However, the competitive events will start on Saturday morning. The agenda will be posted on the MOGA website (www.mogageo.com) at a future date. Please keep in mind that the agenda can change at any time. Please check the website for the latest version.
Whether you are competing or just casual caching, you must register. Every individual must sign a waiver and register. This year, your competition registration and event registration can be done at the same time. Please download the waiver from www.mogageo.com. There is also a waiver included in this manual. Even if you are just thinking about coming, complete a waiver! We must have all waivers turned in prior to the event on Saturday morning.
If you fax your waiver to (866) 579-6010, please bring the original with you to the event. Make sure you bring your registration confirmation with you also.
Pre-registration is required for everyone. Events, competitions and meals must be paid for in advance. The cutoff date will be April 4, 2010, at midnight. There will be no exceptions (don’t ask). We will take walkup registrations but you may not have a packet of goodies. There will be NO refunds for meals. Credit Cards, Paypal, checks and money orders are accepted. Only cash and checks for walkups!
Rules and Games
The competitions are as follows:
Individual Competition – Men’s and Women’s
Starting Coordinates – N 39° 31.730 - W 091° 43.260
The individual competition for men and women will be divided into age and gender groups. The following men’s age groups will be awarded 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) geocoins.
Under 30
30 – 49
50 and older
The following women’s age groups will be awarded 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) geocoins.
Under 30
30 – 49
50 and older
Please make sure you indicate gender and age during online registration.
The competition will consist of individuals looking for 30 punches. The punches will be in small camouflaged containers tied down with nylon string.

You must make sure you punch your scorecard in the appropriate place with the correct punch number. The punches and card will be numbered the same. These punches will be hidden in various areas and the participant will hunt for them on foot. Use of vehicles, bicycles, etc. during the competition will be grounds for disqualification! We will have a shotgun start at 8:00 am and the finish time will be at 11:00 am. You must find as many as you can during this time. All park rules and off-limits areas apply.
2-Person Team Competition
Starting Coordinates – N 39° 31.565 - W 091° 43.185
This course will be the same as the 4-person team event. Two-person teams will have to find as many punches as they can in a 3-hour time limit. You will start at 1:00 pm and must complete no later than 4:00 pm. You must stay together to complete the course. You will be given 1 score card that must be marked with the punch found in each cache. Make sure you punch the proper area of the card, to get credit for that find. These punches will be in small camouflaged containers. Your team finishes when BOTH members return. 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) geocoins will be awarded to the winners of the following age groups.
Under 30
30 – 49
50 and older
This year the average ages of the team members will determine your age group
4-Person Team Competition
Starting Coordinates – N 39° 31.565 - W 091° 43.185
This course will be the same as the 2-person team event. Four-person teams will have to find as many punches as they can in a 3-hour time limit. You will start at 1:00 PM and must complete by 4:00 PM. You can split up to complete the course. At the starting point, your team will be given 4 punch cards with hints. Everyone must make sure they punch the proper area of the card, to get credit for that find. Duplicate punches will not be counted. If you split up, make sure each person in your group understands that all 30 punches should be the goal of the team and each member should have a portion of the 30 punches assigned to them by the team captain. This will eliminate duplicate punches. Make sure you follow your hint sheet and do what it says for each punch. These punches will be small camouflaged containers. Your team finishes when ALL members return. 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) geocoins will be awarded to the winners of the following age groups.
Under 30
30 – 49
50 and older
This year if three team members fall in one of the three age groups, that is the group you will compete in, if not the average ages will determine your age group.
Scoring
The individual or team (2- or 4-person) who finds the most of the 30 punches in the 3-hour time limit wins the competition. In case of a tie, the individual or team that has the quickest time will win. If there is still a tie, a tiebreaker will be used. We will have a 52-card deck and the winners will cut the deck, high card wins.
Awards
For the individual competition, special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to the first, second and third place in each group or bracket.
For the team competitions (2-person and 4-person), special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to each participant in the first, second and third place teams of each age group or bracket. The Minnesota Cup will be awarded as well to the 4-person team that has the overall best score, regardless of age bracket.
Rules
There will be a 3-hour time limit. You (if on the individual course) or your entire team (if on a team course) must finish within the 3-hour limit. Each 5 minutes late reduces your punch count by one. You will receive a 1-punch penalty one second after your designated finish time. After 21 minutes have passed, you will be disqualified!
There will be no driving at any time. Using a vehicle will result in elimination! ONLY FOOT TRAFFIC IS ALLOWED IN THE COMPETITION.
There will be more punches than you can find. You must decide on how you will hunt them, which ones to complete and how you can get the most in the shortest amount of time. Do not trespass or go into off-limit areas!
All park rules must be followed at all times. Course monitors will be stationed around the punches. DO NOT MESS WITH THE CACHE PLACEMENT OR THE PUNCHES!
Remember, we are honest cachers. This is evident in the number of caches that stay in place. Please do not try and destroy or move anything.
Disqualification
Any person or team found altering the cache or course in any way will be disqualified and asked to leave the event.
Anyone coming back after their deadline will be docked 1 punch for each 5 minutes late up to 20 minutes. After 21 minutes, you will be disqualified.
Losing your punch card will result in disqualification!
Team Definitions
Teams must consist of no more than 4 players for the 4-person event and no more than 2 players for the 2-person event.
If you want to compete in the 4-person event with less than 4 people, please understand you will be at a disadvantage.
Each player with the 4-player team should have their own GPS. If you do not, it would be a huge disadvantage as 4-person teams will often split up to find as many caches as possible.
Two-person teams may share a GPS unit or they can both have one as long as they cache together. You will only have one punch card and hint sheet.
Each team must register as a team listing all players. You can have 1 reserve player in the unlikely event someone is unable to compete.
Ten minutes prior to your event starting time, no changes or substitutions will be allowed.
You may form your team at the event. However, 1 person from the team must prepay for the entire team and indicate their team name.
Come with lots of team spirit and be ready to win!
Non-Competitor Caches
The caches will be released late Monday night (April 5, 2010). If you are enroute to MOGA when they are released, the MOGA Director will have a flash drive with a GSAK file of all of the caches. MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR CABLE WITH YOU! We will have a waypoint station at Registration to load you up on Saturday morning. Please look at the agenda. ALL waypoints will be given out so you do not have to return to get anything additional. We can accommodate Garmin Colorado and Oregon GPS units, as well as Delorme 20, 30 and 40. We do not have software for the Magellan Triton models. If you have a Triton, bring your laptop and software.
Do not trespass on private property no matter how close you are to a cache. Property lines are clearly marked with blue markers/paint on trees for Corps property and purple paint on trees for private property.
Poker Run
The Poker Run will start at 8:00am Saturday April 10 and end at 1:00pm Sunday April 11.
Everyone who has registered and completed a waiver form is eligible to play one Poker Run hand. Cachers who bring their whole family and register each member will be allowed to play one hand for each family member.
The Poker Run caches will be hidden along the main road inside the Indian Creek Recreation Area. These caches will not be stocked with the “Poker Chips” until the Friday before the event. These caches will have a difficulty rating of 1 and a terrain rating of 1.5. The Poker Run caches will be named after NASA rockets and space shuttles for easy identification.
Inside each Poker Run cache will be a log book and pencil. There will also be a box of business cards from a local business. These business cards will have some type of discount printed on them to be used anytime during the 2010 year. PLEASE TAKE ONLY ONE business card, per eligible player. The quantity of Poker Run caches will be determined by how many businesses participate. If there are 15 Poker Run caches, it will be wise to retrieve a business card from each cache because only the dealer knows which cards you will need to make a 5-card poker hand.
When you have found all of the Poker Run caches, return to MOGA Central and present your business cards and name tag to the dealer. The dealer will mark your name on the registration list and select and mark the 6 pre-selected business cards and then return them to the player. The player will then be allowed to pick 5 cards from the standard 52-card deck. After the player has made their hand, they may be allowed to remove 1 card from that hand and pick a bonus card. The player’s final hand will be written down and posted if it is in the top 3 best hands.
The top 3 best hands will receive the GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE award geocoins. In the event of a tie, the players will break the tie by cutting a deck of cards. Highest card wins. If one or both players are not present, a MOGA staff representative will cut the cards on their behalf. If the tie is for third place, the winner will get the BRONZE geocoin and the fourth place will get a MOGA staff geocoin. You do not have to be present to win. We will mail your geocoin to the address on the registration.
Registration
Registration will be available electronically only. We will accept walkups but there might not be a packet or nametag available. Please register through the website: www.mogageo.com. The first 100 registrations will receive a MOGA Early Bird pathtag.
ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE WEBSITE!
